"I am no bird; and no one ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will." - Charlotte Bronte. Freedom is something that I think many people take for granted. The official definition of freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. This is such an important right that we have as American citizens, especially in terms of the freedom of speech. It is the foundation of our country. Having the ability to speak freely and stand up for your beliefs is such a powerful thing. People can tell their opinions without feeling afraid. No matter a person's religion, gender, race, sexuality, or belief, they have a voice. This is something not everyone has. The United States of America embraces differences and welcomes new ideas. This all falls under the freedom of speech.

Oftentimes, I think the meaning of having freedom of speech is taken the wrong way. It doesn't mean you can be hateful or disrespectful. It doesn't mean you can harm someone else. What it does mean is that the freedom of speech gives you the ability to express yourself. To stand up for yourself and for your beliefs. This freedom allows you to attend peaceful protests and to be heard. It gives everyone a fair shot at making an impact in our world. If used in the right way, the freedom of speech is an amazing and powerful privilege.
